Navigating Clean Waters: ALCOSAN's Modeling Journey

Sam Shamsi

ABSTRACT

This presentation provides an in-depth overview of ALCOSAN's modeling initiatives supporting the implementation of their Clean Water Plan (CWP) to address sewer overflows and meet the requirements of a Federal Consent Decree. Key topics include the development and deployment of a hydrologic and hydraulic model as an essential element of the plan. The presentation will cover ALCOSAN’s 33-year history with the Storm Water Management Model (SWMM), detailing model features and applications. Additionally, it will highlight the successful model sharing with 55 municipalities for compliance, emphasizing a low-carbon, environmentally conscious approach. Annual model validation and updates will also be discussed, underscoring the model's critical role in the CWP and the collaborative effort involved in its ongoing improvement and usage.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understand the role of hydrologic and hydraulic modeling in ALCOSAN's Clean Water Plan for managing sewer overflows.
  • Explore the features and applications of the Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) in optimizing conveyance system operations and designing CWP facilities.
  • Learn about the collaborative efforts between ALCOSAN, 3RWW, and municipalities in efficiently sharing and updating the model for regulatory compliance.
