Limitations of the Control Basin Comparison Approach and Potential Improvement

Hazem Gheith, ARCADIS, OH, USA

This study evaluates the effectiveness and accuracy of the control basin approach, commonly used in collection system planning to investigate the achieved inflow and infiltration (I/I) reduction within certain segments of a collection system after the application of I/I mitigation technologies. Using pre and post mitigation data from flow meters, the approach uses peak flow and volume to determine changes. However, the effectiveness and accuracy of this approach depends on several key factors, which this study serves to further analyze.
