USEPA’s Research for the Storm Water Management Model (SWMM)

SWMM is the workhouse program for stormwater and wastewater management. In 2005, USEPA refactored SWMM 4 (FORTRAN) into SWMM 5 in C. Green infrastructure was added into SWMM 5.1 in 2010. USEPA continuously develops SWMM with others in a Community Development environment, including recently retired staff. USEPA has developed various methods of software testing, including unit testing, regression testing, and metamorphic testing. In its GitHub site, USEPA encourages community contributions and has an automated GitHub Actions protocol. This talk will discuss developments of SWMM since 2015, the SWMM development community practices, and EPA’s protocol for accepting outside developments to SWMM.
